To those of you who thought that Fax machines had long since disappeared completely from the business landscape (and I include myself in that category) it seems like they are set to make somewhat of an impromptu (and slightly unexpected) comeback, thanks to Voip.
Confused? You should be, because it turns out that there is still a very real demand for Faxes to be sent in the modern business world, and Voip seems to hold the key to their successful re-interrogation. And ironically, the only reason that Faxes ever went away was due to the rise in and use of Voip systems and technology.
This is because the signals used for Fax communication are very different to those used for voice, and as such when Voip technologies compress analogue voice communication it is optimised only for voice and not for Fax.
But all that is set to change, with the rise of Fax Over IP (FOIP) technology - thanks largely to FaxSiPit - a company who have dedicated the past 20 years to tackling the issue of integrating Fax and Voip technologies.
For it was FaxSiPit who saw the potential in a union between the noble Fax and Voip technology many years ago, and who have struggled and stuttered for the past 20 years to make their vision a reality. And what is the key to this success? Well, their new HTTPS system looks to have something to do with it.
And just to keep everything interesting and people on their toes, earlier this year FaxCONNECT made its introduction to the marketplace. Their man Quentin Dibble explains: "It gives users and businesses the opportunity to cut costs whilst allowing them to keep their fax machine - as well as piling on a bunch of advanced features and functionalities".
So it would seem that Fax has officially been upgraded for the 21st Century and that, much like vinyl records, has found another lease of life in the most unexpected of places. But that being said, the demand for communicating by Fax will surely never be what it was, owing largely to the convenience of email.
So Fax is back, and for the near future at least, seems set to re-stake its place on the work stations of businesses all over the western world and beyond - although how long it will remain there for, with the popularity of email is another question entirely. But the fact that something seemingly lost to the annals of history can make such a comeback is comforting, and may just pave the way for more technological comebacks in the coming years. Here's hoping, anyway.
