Voip has become an essential element of the day-to-day communications for a large number of companies across the UK. However, companies in more rural locations have, until now, struggled with dependable Voip connections.
And the change could not come too soon for many industry insiders, such as Trevor Davis of the Internet Service Providers Association, who referred to the current situation as being particularly important, stating that: "Only roughly two thirds of the UK population can access Voip connections".
Given the connection capabilities and network coverage of our European neighbours, it seems highly unlikely that the present plans will not be accepted by parliament - in an attempt to assist the growth of UK businesses and the economy if nothing else - but for now they are still caught in the melee of the parliamentary process.
The upgrade would also see the speed of broadband connectivity throughout the UK increase to at least 25 mbps, with the remaining 10% unfortunately being left uncovered until such times as the infrastructure of the country can be improved.
But because Voip is, technically, just an update of a traditional phone service, it is a governmental issue which will need to be accessible to the masses before the next step can be taken.
And so it is going to take a joint, concerted effort by both parties - the governmental bodies and the private sector - in order to come to a mutually beneficial understanding that is fair to all but which puts the interests of UK business and consumers first.
It seems strange that when compared to our European neighbours such as France and Germany, we are still a long way behind in terms of 3G - let alone 4G - coverage and broadband connectivity, something that they have taken for granted for years.
And with the added bonus of improved Voip communications across (almost) all UK businesses, the future starts to look a bit brighter for the UK economy and economic climate. Just a word of warning to finish on, when choosing your Voip service provider (if you haven't done so already) be sure to look past the cheapest offer and choose a company with a reliable and proven track record that won't put your business at risk.
